The New York Anime Festival was held this weekend and included an hour long Avatar panel hosted by Nick Magazine's Dave Roman. The panel had well over a hundred enthusiastic fans in attendance to see what Dave and his fellow Nick Mag staffers had in store for us.

The program began with a review of the promo video for the "Avatar: The Burning Earth" video game and a "trivia bending battle" where audience members competed to win Avatar video games, DVDs, and copies of the second Avatar magazine signed by Mike & Bryan.

Dave and the other Nick Mag staff members then walked us though some of the highlights of the second Avatar Mag. Apparently Mike, Bryan and Aaron loved the idea of using the second magazine to fill in the gap between season two and three so much that they sent Dave about 35 pages of material - far more than they could ever squeeze into the magazine.

After the magazine tour, Dave showed us some preview frames from the next mini comic that will appear with the second volume DVD for season 3 that will be released in January. The cover for this comic is the "I want YOU" Sokka poster at left.

Next up was a few breathtaking background shots from some unaired season 3 episodes. Dave confirmed most of them were from episode 312, "The Western Air Temple."

Lastly, the most fun was had when they showed a series of funny "what if" sketches made by Avatar storyboarder and Avatar Mag writer / artist, Johane Matte. These shots included sketches of Momo punching Zuko as he tries to join the Gaang, and older versions of the cast (including a shot of Zuko and Mai with a child of their own) as part of a would-be epilogue.

All in all it was a great time and a lot of fun for the fans. Click on either thumbnail at right or left to see all 38 pictures from this event.

A few days ago tvshowsondvd.com published the rear cover of the upcoming Season 3, volume 2 DVD release that will appear for sale on January 22nd.

The rear cover confirms that the volume 2 set will contain only up through episode 310, "The Invasion." The second part of The Day of Black Sun, "The Eclipse", will therefore appear on the volume 3 set, the release date for which is not yet known.

The cover is seen at left. Click on the thumbnail to see it full size, or click here to read the full review at tvshowsondvd.com.

NY Anime Fest: After some confusion in various Avatar forums, Dave Roman has confirmed in a journal entry on his DA account that pretty much everything but the background panels presented at the NY Anime Festival Avatar panel were just fun "what if's" developed by him and the extra talented Johane Matte, Alison Wilgus and Tina Lam. Thanks to the latter two as well for helping Dave make the panel so much fun for all who attended!

As an additional bonus, Johane posted those fake storyboards on her DA account for all to enjoy. They are much better than the slightly distorted pictures that we were able to take at the panel itself. Drop by her DA page and take a look!
